Rails of Sheffield do a top 10 list of the current best sellers. There is always a fascination with lists. Interesting to note that modern outline and steam are split 50/50 with modern outline featuring 4 times in the top five.

Now what does this say about modellers in the Sheffield area?

Would this trend be different in other parts of the country?

And how long will the Hornby Class 08 stay at Nr 1?

It probably is the best model in the list.

1) Br Green Class 08 3256 Diesel Electric Shunter Loco

2) Class A1 60156 'Great Central' BR Green Late Crest (Rivetted Tender)

3) Freightliner Class 66 610 Diesel Locomotive

4) Class 37 025 Inverness TMD BR L/L Blue Diesel Locomotive

5) GB Railfreight Class 66 701 Diesel Locomotive

6) Class 66 552 'Maltby Raider' Freightliner Diesel Locomotive

7) BR Black Class 2800 2-8-0 Locomotive (Weathered)

Ten weeks on and the top 10 list at Rails of Sheffield is looking somewhat different. Steam is now outselling modern outline by 6/4 although modern outline features twice in the top five with the Class 31 being the top seller right now.

From a Hornby point of view its interesting to note that whilst steam locomotives outnumber modern outline locomotives almost 2 to 1 in the Hornby catalogue, modern outline on the evidence so far seems to make a stronger showing in the top 10 lists.

And what has happened to the Hornby Grange and the Class 08/09 shunters? For the most part sold out and on re-order! There appears to be only the black BR Grange available and this in my view was always likely to be the least popular of the new Grange releases. If you are going to do a GWR/BR loco it has to be green or else forget it. Clearly a loco cannot make a chart entry if it is sold out.

Is modern outline more popular than the manufacturers would believe?

Interesting to note that the Hornby 08/09 is sold out. Particularly as lots of people thought Hornby had made big mistake in producing it. It is apparently out selling the Bachmann version.

M7 from Hornby next year ?

The Class 08/09 has had good press. Not many people have found anything wrong with it. When compared to the latest Bachmann, it comes out on top. Why would somebody spend money on a loco running second best in any race? Perhaps if the Bachmann an had come out earlier, it would have faired better.
