The UK's first tender mounted socket?

Getting a decoder into the boiler of an Ivatt 2MT might be "interesting" so I can see the logic.

Hornby have included tender pickup for a number of years - certainly the Black 5 has it and I assume the've continued the practice as standard. But they've not exploited this to put the decoder in the tender.

Through wiring has its drawbacks and I notice Bachmann went for a satellite decoder in their 108 ( which also has cost drawbacks) . But it could certainly make a lot of decoder installations much easier

I had a Hornby Ivatt 2MT long ago - it was my first "proper" loco , and I might be tempted even though kettles are not my normal scene

Not always - Roco used a 4-pole conductive & close coupling on their ET420 3-care set years ago - these things can easily be achieved if the manufacture can be bothered to do so.
Piko currently use a similar multipole coupling on some of their larger steam locomotives (& they have fitted lights).

Let's hope this is the beginning of a trend and not a one off!

Easy access to decoder sockets, whether pre-fitted with decoder or not, is vital for encouraging further take up of DCC.

slightly confused about why they are going for a perminant coupling rather than the traditional "Spectrum" soloution of a plug and socket between the tender. it is probably because the briittish are ham fisted and will break it.

I'll second that, I had to modify my tender connection to get it to work. Incidentally, now that it has been converted to DCC it runs even better. I am looking forward to this Ivatt, it will join my Comet Models kit. A strange thing has been happening, I have been having kits built and they are turning up as R-T-R by Bachmann. The Ivatt was my most recent, the DJH Standard 4MT preceeded that, and I am currently having a Brassmaster's Jubilee built, and, lo and behold, Bachmann are doing an upgrade to their model (which hardly has the presence of a Jubilee).

I've been doing the same. I've been building a Comet Royal Scot and Lo and behold Hornby anounce a Royal Scot. By the time I start my DJH A-2 somebody will doing one of those.
