Hi All

After some views. I have a 8 x 4 baseboard and have come up with the following plans. Just after views of what people think of them. The setting is purely ficticious, it will be a run what i like layout.
It will be OO and prefer continuous runs, but open to any ideas/adjustments anyone might have.

Cheers

Surprisingly no one has commented given how opinionated we all are on here;

My view is that a double roundy is twice as good as a single 'cos you can run two trains at the same time, as I developed my theme I ended up with a quad roundy and so it went until I had 8 circuits.

Now you need to rationalise if you like shunting and that sort of activity or watching trains run around. The other difficulty is that the inner area will be where the platforms stations goods facilities are and this comes difficult for the outer line.

I got around this by having loops on the ends so I could keep full trains ready to go.

Headshunts are a poor operating idea

Station loops are good to hold trains, in fact the GCR idea of the London extension of a central platform saves space/width might be worth consideration.

Thanks

Have been playing with plans and just finalised a plan that works for me.

Hi There is nothing wrong with having a single track circuit . Whilst running two trains at the same time could be good a single line with passing loops can offer operating interest as well. All though an 8x4 board can accommodate a double track there is a risk it could be come all track. It really depends on your preference and want you want from your layout. One thing to consider is that at 8x4 before your longest train may only have four coaches any more and they may be classed as tail chasers . For example a while back I took some measurements and a Castle class and four Collett 60ft coaches work out at around 4ft. Its just a thought to ponder on . Jim

the plan above has the line to sheds so run from there to meet the siding by running right and along the curve.

Pappa B of course there is nothing wrong with the way a layout is laid out, I tend to look at real railways and try something along those lines but it all depends upon space, my OO9 is single line but my big railway is 4 track, 19 loops for storage etc, all down to what you want just giving my opinion is all.

Old terminal is here on the left Adolphus Square now a goods depot as the GCR avoiding line goes past to the right I kinda like this

Hi Kristopher Yes nothing at all wrong with your opinion my point was that there are options . Your layout is quite big and depicts a busy place so lots of track is in keeping with your theme . When you have only an 8x4 space it does restrict your ambitions some what if you want something realistic. By the way I believe passing loops were rare in steam days except maybe in station areas as facing points were discouraged so my suggestion of them incorrect. Barney could put a scenic break in with storage loops behind to hold trains off scene this might help the layout look more realistic . Jim

Just one observation on the continuous running lines, might be a better idea to use points which aren’t small radius where possible as this will be a very sudden curve from the straight.

Sometimes it the only way but as long as you are aware.
