Trix Big Boy Help

Hello,
I have a Trix Big Boy with Lok sound 2.0. The engine needed some cleaning so i took it to the bench to clean the tender wheels and engine wheels and to oil the rods and cranks and to check the gears to see if they needed lube. I reassembled the wheels in the tender and made sure the spings were in corrected and the wheels were positioned right. I also checked to see that the driver springs were in right and that the pickup shoes were also in right. I put the engine back on the track to run it and it shorted out. I took it back to the bench to make sure i got everything back the way it was and than back to the track. I just put the tender on the track and put power to it and no short, but as soon as i put the engine, by itself to the track it shorted out. I running DCC using Digitrax Command Control with the DT400 throttle. I don't know where i went wrong. Does anyone have any ideas for me on where i should look for the problem?

Did you put the wheels back on the right way round so that the insulated centres aren't causing the short?

I made this mistake once too when cleaning the wheels on my Trix P8.

Not sure what you mean about the insulated centers being the wrong way. Are you talking about the centers in the middle of the wheels? If so, i never took the drivers apart or completely out. But what i am wondering about, if oil got in between the insulator and the wheel, could that cause the short and how would i clean the oil out without taking the drivers out and taking them apart? I did find out that there can be hardly any oil on the wheels on the tender, because that wheel cause the tender to short out.

***You mention that you checked the driver springs and the pickup shoes.... I presume you mean pickups and not shoes - shoe usually means a 3 rail pickup

Anyway - if you checked them this means you must have accessed them somehow - did you remove them? if so, its likely that when you replaced them you have accidentally put one out of position and made a contact between a pickup and the chassis instead of just to the wheel. you will have to carefully disassemble again and check step by step as you go..

Re the oil, no, it will not cause a short.

Bin there, done that !

A few years ago I bought a Hamo CL53 (the 2-6-8-0 they never built) as a "non-runner" for the appropriate price & found that just one of the tender axels had been reversed. Once rectified it was a superb (if a little "geary") runner, only sold when I purchased a brand new Trix condensing tender version.
