In Memoriam : Ewen Crosweller

It is with great sadness that we have to report the passing of one of the cornerstones of our group: Ewen Crosweller. He died in his sleep on April 7th, just a few months after his 71st birthday.

Ewen joined our club in 2008; he constructed all the pointwork on Addison Road and more recently had been busy working on the station buildings. He was a well-known face on the exhibition demonstration circuit - originally making EM pointwork and latterly, since he joind the AR group, making O gauge points.

Our sincere condolences go out to Ewen's widow, Barbara, and his daughters Lydia and Rebecca and their families. A full obituary will appear in the next O Gauge Guild Gazette

Recently, we have fitted some buffer stops to the bay platforms ...............

Someone (?) has been busy scratchbuilding the fireman's call points ...................

and a team has been spray painting (weathering) the track ................

A recent running session saw some new stock ...

This SR H2 is owned by a TDMRC member who isn't a member of the AR group - hope we see this again at future running night's ....

This GWR Metro tank is not completely new but has been 'finished off' since the last time we saw it...............

This Hall is another 'first timer' .........

June is here and holidays will soon cut into club night attendance but progress is still being made away from club ...........

Peter has completed painting the signal levers - our first attempt at 3D printing

Looks good in the signal box which will be at the front of the layout.

Next job is to fit the platform lamps - more on this soon

Not much happening on the layout at the moment - what with holidays and the nice weather the last two weeks have been a bit quiet. So maybe it's time to take stock .....

This is basically a layout blog, recording progress on TDMRC's new O gauge layout. Any MRF registered member can leave comments, questions etc - you don't have to be a member of TDMRC to post on any of the TDMRC threads - but we reserve the right to edit/delete them!

The Club meets on most Friday nights and (hopefully) monthly for Saturday daytime sessions. We are now holding occasional running sessions and potential members are welcome to bring down the odd item of stock to join in - but remember we are still 'fault finding' and tesing.

Potential members and/or visitors can send me a PM or (better still) contact the Club officers via our website www.tdmrc.org.uk

From now on you will be seeing a new name doing most of the updates - TDMRC-MOD - who has taken over as moderator for the TDMRC sub-forum.

OK, holiday's over .... let's get back to work!

Work on the canopies has been going on away from Club with several members getting involved. Graham made the brass pillars and his photos show the progress made so far ...

Over the last couple of months work has been concentrated on the platforms.

The layout needs a number of platform oil lamps and several months ago we published drawings of the type we needed for the layout. We asked members to keep their eyes open at exhibitions etc to see if anything suitable was provided by the trade. However, we always thought we would have to resort to making our own home-made versions using 3D printing; but it was pointed out that DCC Concepts produce a 4mm scale yard lamp that, using the large extension base included in the pack, pretty much filled the bill as a 7mm platform lamp. What's more they light up!

Having decided that these were the best lamps for the job we acquired enough for the layout and have spent the last few weeks fitting them. They turned out to be a really high quality product - not anything like the ready made lamps you often see for sale at shows. The DCC Concepts catalogue list these lamps as MASTERscene 4mm oil lamps ref DML-LMSO. Many 7mm modellers may not be familar with these lamps (and the many other interesting cutting edge electrical items produced by DCC Concepts) and so we recommend you look at their website http://www.dccconcepts.com .

Our first photo shows the standard lamp and the extension base ....

The second photo shows them positioned on the UP platform alongside the etched brass station nameboards made from our own artwork ...

And here is a general view ... all it needs is power them up, dim the clubroom lights and blow some dry ice smoke over the layout and suddenly it's a foggy night in November 1925

*** Nice to see them "re-tasked" to 7mm scale and looking the part... I look forward to seeing them lit up sometime soon!

Last week was all about our new super-duper platform lamps and one important photo was omitted ... Pat drilling the platforms ... makes a change from making signals!

OOPs! Looks like the photo has been omitted again!!

This week we took delivery of the painted platelayers from Eddie. Eddie is really an 'N gauge' man and a 'N gauge TRAM man' at that! But in the true club spirit he has been encourage to help with Addison Road - one of his most prominent contributions will be this cameo which will feature right at the front of the layout......

Hello Jon ( and all our other followers )

Thanks for your comments.

BTW the 'team' will be at RMweblive in Coventry on September 13/14 to give a talk on new technologies and how they can be used to build better layouts.

Not many photos this week as our usual photo journalist is on holiday, but here's one ....

This photo shows Pat's latest masterpiece ... the down home gantry . Pat brought it down to give members an update on how work is progressing on this iconic piece of Addison Road folklore, albeit it will be part hidden behind the Hammersmith Road bridge. The working mechanism is yet to be added, hence it's somewhat random route setting!

Pat is crucial to the success of the group ( and hence the layout ) .......... he is one of those members that a group leader dreams of .... someone who puts up his hand and says "I will take responsibility for ?*?*?". In pat's case it was the signals - he's made them all! And they work!! And they light up!!!

Mid-August and the pressure's on! Peter and Grant are giving a talk at RMweblive on September 13/14 and want to take a near completed station board with them to illustrate the techniques they'll be demonstrating - can we get it (near) completed in time?

Our two priorities are the station building and the platform canopies.

Early August and Graham re-assembles the brass framework to support the canopies on the up platform ....

Later that night the up canopies are trial fitted along with the up station building .....

Speaking of station buildings .... Keith has been working away at home on the up booking hall and he brought it along with the first mock-up of the roof in place for the first time .......

Whilst the down booking hall is a bit more advanced .....

Peter and Grant will be talking about how to use new technologies to build models and it appears it will be a 'hot ticket' as it has been highlighted as the #1 attraction at RBweblive as rated by the organisers themselves - so no pressure then!!

The building team are still concentrating on the canopies and station buildings to get them ready for our talk at RMWEBlive ....

Some final soldering to get the frames nice and solid ......

Brackets (laser cut MDF) have now been fitted ...... look back at previous posts to see how the brackets were made .......

Now paint with primer .......

Meanwhile back at the workbench..........

Adding the chimneys ... made by our member in Boston (USA) and delivered by hand during his recent visit .......

We have now got to the stage where we can compare the plans ...

with the reality...

Speaking as someone who just writes these reports and has done absolutely nothing towards building this layout in a practical sense .... that looks pretty good to me!

BTW ... Grant ( the person who has done most of the research of the REAL Addison Road ) and Peter ( the person who has lead the modelling aspect of this project ) are combining their talents to present a talk at RMweblive in Coventry on September 13/14 ... if you have been following this thread please come along and make yourselves known and say 'HELLO'.

It's all leading up to Grant and Peter's talk this weekend at RMwebLIVE - all about planning layouts based on real places using aerial photography - sounds great!

One of the other attractions at RMwebLIVE will be to meet Richard Johnson of DCC Concepts ... we've used his lamps on the platforms (see earlier posts on this thread) and, as he will (no doubt) be popping along to see us, we thought we should get the lamps wired up in his honour.

Actually, there's only one lamp on the board we're taking along, but here is the gizmo that ensures we get just the low level glow from the (oil) lamps and not a short bright flash!

Meanwhile, Mike has finished off the station building rooves with the fascias - just needs guttering now!

See you at the weekend - come and say hello if you follow this thread!
