Unusual builds.

Splitting off from one of my posts on the Leader topic, a quick question.

What is the most unusual model that you have built? Can be steam, diesel, gas-turbine, anything. Can be scratch-built, or kit. Anything goes.

One rule though folks: No flaming others for their models or choices.

Thanks, and lets see what you have.

How's this to kick things off? Most people here will have seen it before, infact I've added it to my sig. at the bottom but maybe you haven't

You can see the build here

Interesting choice to start. GWR pacific, very nice.

Any more?

I'm currently working on a model based on the Reid-MacLeod condensing-turbine from North British Locomtives. Photos to be posted soon.
i have several on the go. the german cab forward is porbably the most unusual but my W1 hush hush cant be far behind.

i am on a very slow connection now but i will post some pictures friday.

I am tinkering with a BR standard 9F reworked into an oil-fired cab forward 2-10-2. Possibly to be fitted with twin Giesl type preheaters and a US style twelve axle Vanderbilt tender. (Supporting theory is that BR realised that throwing away these newly constructed locos was a crime, but they had to fit in with a water-troughless mainly diesel or electric worked BR, so maximum efficiency and tender water capacity is key.) The upside to this is that class 37's are thereby rendered unnecessary, with the consequnet long term reduction in pain within UK railway modelling.
Hi,
I'm working on a couple of unusual old whitemetal kits, that I think are both out of production now :

Crownline Kitson LMS/BR (the BR built version)

K's LMS Dock Tank.

I'm not doing these as they are starter kits - (as the Dock Tank valve gear is causing apoplexy!) - merely because I have purchased/built the big 'swanky' locos already and these tank engines actually appeared at my prototype location.

I am nearly at the paint stage for the LMS Dock Tank and I am trying to source a couple of parts for the Kitson that were not included in the original kit (such as the strange box on the back of the cab - which I may have to fashion myself).

I will try and post some pics when I am happy with the results...

Love the GW Pacific too...

Firstly, a very interesting idea, have you started it? If so let's see it as you progress.

Secondly, if you re-write history like that what are all the RTR manufacturers going to br making? You've just robbed them of one of their mainstays

Well mine would be the current project of a B17/5 (pics of the build so far can be found in the work bench thread)

Many years ago, I did convert my very first loco into a Southern E2, got the livery all wrong looking back at it now, and also did start on a project to botch an old 0-4-0 dock shunter body shell onto the old hornby 0-4-0 standard pug chassis that went into every small loco they ever made, never did finish it, probibilly lying around the garage somewhere

How about a Caledonian 'Beetlecrusher' 0-6-0 dock tank (from a Caley Coaches kit)or a Highland 4-4-0 Yankee tank fom an Alan Gibson kit.

I can do better on odd coaches though. Two MR clerestory Dining Cars, A HR PO tender, A MR Inspection Saloon, the HR Director's Saloon and so on. All built from my own kits BTW.
I did do a "Germanified" Brittania about a year ago.

All black with red frames wheels and motion, German style deflectors (a la A3) tender converted to oil firing and, if I remember correctly the number 01.7013.

It actually looked quite good - BC have you still got the photos?

No, but the loco is still in the workshop.

It was the chance acquisition of a vandy tender that got this going: progress is a back of envelope sketch to see if it would work, and still physically fit on a 70' turntable. Must admit that having followed the GR King make a P1 show on RMWeb, that will be an earlier priority, as I have much of the gubbins to hand for that as well.
See my drawing.s on the thread GWR locos that never were.

I did a beetlecrusher ex Caley tank from a Wills kit - picture to follow.

My C15 built using a Nucast Kit and the Beetlecrusher - these were done 25 years ago!

LMS 4-6-4 and original proposal for class 8 BR 4-6-2
All these models were done 25 years or so ago using Hornby tender drives - I have plans to do a new updated set with modern mechanisms.
Probably some of my scratchbuilt models - pictures to be shown soon but i havent finished them yet!!!

That LMS taper boiler 4-4-0 would be my pick - how pretty is that?
Afternoon
Here should be 3 links to pics of my most unusual build.
The last Ivatt Black 5 ever built, using Comets' LRP kit as a basis.
Currently awaiting the fitting of a DCC Sound project.

Very nice Steve. I like the setting you've photographed it in too.

Is that unusual rod from the centre driver to a location above the cylinders for Caprotti valve gear?
