Your photos in the gallery don't need to be too big. You are going to display them online anyway in most cases so they don't have to be right out of the camera.

I recommend something like Google Picasa. With Picasa (http://picasa.google.com/) you can manage, sort, search, touch-up and modify your photos. Believe me, after 10 years of digital photos, you'll need something like this.
What I do when I want to upload a photo online, I'll export the photos to a temporary directory, resizing them to a suitable size in the process. Anything from 700 to 1024 pixels wide depending on what I'm going to do with the photo online. The original photo from the camera, I leave in place as a backup in its original size.
Then from the export folder, I can quickly and efficiently upload the photos online or to one of my blogs.
