Yesterday at the Alexandra Palace show I saw 2 operators using a minute magnet about the size of a match head attached to a small torch by a length of copper wire for uncoupling rolling stock. The magnet was applied to the couplings and pulled them up. The wagons etc were then separated by hand. The light illuminated the target area. I asked one guy where he got the magnets from but the answer was not very specific. He thought it was something like "magnet man" in the USA. I have been unable to locate anything like these magnets on the internet. Does anyone know where they can be found? Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Hi Mike,

A quick Goole UK search shows a list of suppliers for 'Rare Earth Magnets', these a very powerful for their size which have formed the basis for some remote uncoupling articles - the September 2008 'Railway Modeller' for example.
The first that came up on my search was:
http://www.mutr.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=384
listing sizes from 4mm dia. x 2mm at £0.43 + vat.

I would imagine a more thorough search may provide something similar to the size you mention.

Regards.
