QUOTE (10001 @ 14 Dec 2010, 08:27) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Hi Dave . There's nothing mandatory about liking this thread . If you don't like it be upstanding and say so. If there is something you like about it, swallow your pride and say so ! ( beware --- I'm not keen on 'stream of consciousness' postings) I have, and run quite a few diesels on the Goon Valley Railway ,( surprisingly I have over 60 diesel locomotives). One is even named in honour of the Goon Valley Railway's Chief Mechanical Engineer.( that's me!!) What about you??? Loll. I acknowledge that diesels are a part of Railway History and should be treated as such. It is a pity that some juvenile so called enthusiasts can't be similarly disposed towards the older form of traction and its supporters.
In my yoof ( as you so in-aptly put it) there was never a case of one loco dragging another . Both pilot engine and the train loco crews worked in unison and maximum effort was achieved. Most often communication between engine crews was done by whistles,. That should give something to chortle about.
But to answer your question , my double headers (DC control of course) manage 9 coaches up my inclines.( 1 in 38 to 1 in 50). There is no need to try any greater load as longer trains will not fit in my platforms nor in my passing loops.

Regards

ah yes, in these days of multiple working it's easy to forget the lost art of whistle signals.

Personally i love this thread. It's made me hunt out my music library on the PC to review my collection of 149 goon shows much to the missus annoyance lol.
I even found a "lost" episode on a reel to reel tape recorder a few years back. This thread always makes me laugh (in a good way).

I dug this picture out that i thought you might appreciate.

9 coach double heading is a decent amount, i gave up on it as two class 47s on 4 coaches doesn't look right, unless i "fake" a breakdown.

Anyway, look forward to seeing more.

Here's to the old country sir!...
Which country?...
Any old country, cheers!....

Hi Tony, good to see the G.V.R on page one! I have just been right back to page one and read the whole thread.... a great read and some inspirational pictures.... we've been very snowed under, up in the 'Peak District', so not been able to have any leisure time out in the shed! But reading this thread has made me determined to restart again this weekend!( as long as the forecast snow this week ain't too deep!)
Keep the photo's coming... I think the LNWR station buildings look great....
Cheers, joe

Why not, thats the way it was done before DCC.

As long as the locos run at similar speeds and the controller can handle the load where is the problem? I used to run a lima HST in a full 2+8 formation (back when i had the space) with a powered car at each end. Ran it for months (not continuously of course) with no problem, Used to use a H&M Duette controller.

Thank you Joe for your flattering comments. Our weather couldn't be more different. It has been so hot and dry for weeks now and our usually hot and dry Summer is still weeks away . Already the farmers are talking about drought conditions . This week we have had some temporary respite with an inch of rain on Tuesday ,some drizzle yesterday and drizzle all day today. but the weeds still grow !!! The extra work in the garden means less time for modelling.

I bet you haven't had a chance to try out making any limestone rocks yet.

QUOTE (Expat @ 16 Dec 2010, 08:37) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>No problem Tony. I just never managed to do it successfully when I ran 00 DC.

I only manage it with loco's of the same manufacturer and similar age. Tried a Lima 47 and a hornby 37 way back when and the noise was horrific.

Must have been because the 47 uses Green Circle multiple working and the 37 uses blue star so they're incompatible lol

To get this into perspective Dave .I left the UK before the class 47 and 37s were built. But on a later holiday I did see some two-tone green class 47s on the western region at Banbury in C1965 and I was very impressed by the fact that after noting them on a north-bound train it seemed only a few minutes before they re-appeared on a south-bound train ( London- Birmingham-London , I suppose). I'm not so sure about the class 37s though , but I do recall a Hit -tune called '' Blue Star ". Now when was that then???
Probably before you were born. !!

Victor Young ? 1955? Theme tune to a TV show called "Medic" was released as a song a few years later i believe. Not that i like TV shows like Medic lol

Blue Star is/was also a Ferry company I believe, and a Bus Company, although it might have been taken over by now.

I've just read through the whole thread and have found it very inspirational. My layout is at the 'boards finished stage' so seeing photos of peoples layouts gives me plenty of ideas for things that I can incorporate into my own layout. Hopefully I'll be able to make a proper start on it after Christmas. No constructive criticism from me in any thread really. Not only because I have no experience but because I describe locos by colour as I don't have the faintest idea what any of them are

Really very impressed with the cardboard scratch built buildings. Only time will tell whether I have the skills to build something from scratch but it always amazes me where people get their inspiration and ideas from!

I live in Kettering (born and raised) and spent a lot of time as a kid messing about by the railway near the station. I intend to have two villages on my layout called Wymington and Finedon, where my parents are from. I remember the Long Buckby canal but its been a long time since I've been there.

Hi Marcus .
Welcome to the crazy world of the GVR. Glad you liked the thread. Kettering was always an exciting station to visit when I was a young spotter.I remember the village of Finedon , But not I regret,Wymington, Still that is all a long time ago!!!

I do recommend giving a try to building in cardboard . It's very rewarding and if you do make a "pig's ear " of it it hasn't cost the earth, and then with a couple of tweeks your masterpiece appears. It really is quite easy.

Good luck with your endeavours. I shall keep a watch on your progress.

Hello Tony,

Just caught up with your excellent thread again, I'm well impressed by your photos, in particular the variety of locos you have. I love the LMS ones most of all but it's great to see the southern locos and an A4 as well. I must say I find it all very refreshing!

Keep up the good work,

Regards,
Clive

Hi Clive I am pleased that you have caught up with the GVR again and that you enjoyed the thread . Obviously the LMS is my favourite as the West Coast Main line was only a stones throw from our house. But because the LNER ( old Great Central) and the Great Western
were also not so far away ( at Rugby and Banbury and Leamington) ,we enjoyed cycling trips to watch those railways too . We only got to see the Southern when we could afford trips up to London, all very enjoyable , as was a weeks cycling trip to Bournemouth in C1951. (We cycled 133 miles with all our weeks supplies, in one day , and back again a week later, spent the nights in the YMCA ).I wonder whether todays kids could do that.
I have been working on a model of the Ex LNWR 4-6-0 Prince Of Wales class recently , which ( if I remember correctly, was a favourite of yours) and am now awaiting transfers and a nameplate to finish her off. Thanks for your interest .

Regards and Happy Christmas.
