What a nightmare day I've just had

I must admit as days go the one I've just had today at work has had to go down as one of the busiest and stressfull days of my life.

With me working for North Yorkshire Police in the control room this has had to be the busiest for a while with all the bad weather causing problems beyond belief. I was struggling to keep a lid on my normally cool persona with minimal staff, flooding and other incidents going on.

The best bit about it was knowing though that at the end of my shift I know I had made a difference to the North Yorkshire public and helped to save a few town peoples lives.

I would like to thank all those who helped in the effort as well as my colleagues both civilian and officers, council and highways workers and environmental agency staff to keep Pickering, Sinnington and the surrounding areas as safe as we possibly could.

good work harkins

yesterday really was "one of those days". my father lives in tenbury wells which was flodded. lukely he lives on a nearby hill but its such a small town that even a small flood has a huge effect.

for the record i also had a bad day. we lost about 300gb of data off the server!

Hi Peter,

What implications if any has this on the site ? as somebody who i know had a site and problems with his server.

Sounds like a bad day Harkins. However at least you know that you have helped other people have a less miserable day.

Hello upnick.

sorry not the MRF server! dont panic!
My day job is in a TV station and we had our anual power down for building maintanance on friday night. on saturday morning the main broadcast server completly freaked! thankfully i am pretty religious about backing things up and keeping track of the tapes so i think the only things we have lost are a few government information films (those fire safty adverts you see on the telly and green cross code stuff) and a few things from the republican convention so not too serious. we actually have a backup server but rather frustratingly it dosent back up very well!

I have to admit we didn't have quite as much water as the photo of Newcastle, although at 22:30 on Saturday it was raining so heavily I couldn't get out of the pub! (cries of shame).

But seriously well done to all those who dealt with these storms nad the following floods.

Got well soaked through on Friday night..up till 11 pm........conducting training in 'night operations' s part of one of the courses I instruct on......all outside, well exposed area........it peeee'd down.....wet through despite apologies for government-issue foul weather gear....

Am currently having to drive around in my trials car.....it copes with the inevitable localised floods quite competently...which is more than can be said for the average modern car........wading rivers and driving up stream beds non-stop are all grist to the mill for a trialler.....even if the car does look a sight.

Good news MRF server isnt affected then

i remember some of the goverment info films esp the one for lifeguards with the little fellow in a hat and wife "petunia" l

In last year's floods Ontracks suffered badly for nearly a week - although their business is in the Welsh Marches their server is in Gloucester and the ground floor of that business was flooded. It was days before staff could get access to fix the mess! It just shows how vulnerable we can all be to apparently "remote" problems!

My main concern is that progress on the garden railway has slowed to a snail's pace (and God knows there are enough of them to prove it!). I have been wanting to treat the track for weeks so that it is in good fettle for the winter but it simply hasn't dried out...... sigh.....
