If you do not like the price of Loksound 3.5 decoders you are not going to like the price of Zimo decoders for locomotive detection.
AFAIK the only true locomotive feedback combination is Zimo. The loco chips are well priced, but the accessory decoder to say which block which chip (don't know if it can feed back more than one locomotive per block) is in is about EUR400 which will cover 16 blocks. To use all the functionality you also need their software, but other software no doubt will be able to use the functionality.
