What if?

A frequent complaint by rivet counters is that this or that is not prototypical. Does it really matter whether it is or is not as long as you are happy running whatever you enjoy on your layout? Now while this has been discussed frequently before, here is a new dimension to the argument. The links below will show some very unprototypical, yet very nice, locos. These may be heresy to some, so if easily offended then don't follow the links. These locos are for the broadminded.

Would you buy these and run these on your layout?

GNER A4

Virgin A4

LNER HST

APT-P in LMS red

South West Bulleid Pacifics

I suppose the next question is, "what coaches do you run with your GNER A4?" Mk3's?

I like the A4 but i think ti would look much better with the letters on the tender and the crest in the middle of the letters or on the cab side.

I think my favorate from that site is the APT in intercity executive livery.

An enjoyable website. I thought that the modern liveries as applied to steam engines looked a bit too garish, but old LNER/GWR/LMS etc. liveries on newer trains like the HST appealled to me more. I probably wouldn't want to run any 'heavily' ficticious liveries such as these but anything where a locomotive was just 'a signature' away from carrying the livery in real life would be fine...lightly ficticious you could call it. In fact people who don't spend their lives checking just which train wore which livery for which years are already enjoying this aspect of modelling. As long as one captures the 'feel' of the railway then I don't mind if X never had Y livery.

Is it just me or does the APT look hideously ugly no matter what livery it is paintshopped into? The lights are too low down in my opinion... (It needs a facelift!) but it never got beyond a prototype did it? And the HST does look better than the HST prototype...

A friend of mine once painted a Bulleid pacific into the colours of Network Southeast. It ran on an exhibition layout for a while and actually looked quite good.

I thought some of them looked pretty good. I guess the modern ones would be what we could maybe have seen if the railways hadn't been nationalised.
I wouldn't mind seeing a 375 in Southern "sunshine" livery, I have a suspicion it might just work, or how about a 66 in fully lined GWR scheme?

I think Ill stop here before they put the screens up and start the injections again.

Nah....too many people would complain about the increased cost. LOL.

Which of course is why we don't get many loco models made available in pregrouping liveries, to do justice to something like the SE&CR would be exorbitant.

What? Matt grey with white lettering?

LNER black with yellow lettering...............well if you want austerity........I was of course referring to proper liveries

this idea isn't new......and there are many modelling US-style prototypes(?) who invent liveries for their own personal railroad/shortline.
mind, US steamers are easy to paint..they're pretty much all black!

however, it seems this thread has sort-of pre-empted the most recent 'Model Rail' mag (just dropped thru the letterbox)......the 'Trials of Treoch' series.....in which the author has engaged another to 'renumber and rename' some Bulleid pacifics, with mythical identities....ie more in keeping with the layout's location?

I'm not sure I sit comfortably with this kind of 'freelancing?'

I appreciate and admire the freelance modelling of the likes of John Ahern and Edward Beal..........but am not sure about simple 'fake identities?'

I would prefer not to have 'bulleids that never were'......as there is little 'suspension of belief' in that.

However, I see no wrong in a modeller running any loco, even if that loco might be subject to the nitpickers..ie, 'that never ran in the modelled area' etc....

As I've mentioned before I like this sort of thing to a point. My layout is a fictitious heritage line so I can run all the different locos I like and as it's set "present day" I've some of the real life fictitious liveries. Some of these have been produced by the leading model companies (sales wise in the UK that is) and one of these is directly responsible for getting me back into railway modelling. I am of course talking about 35005 Canadian Pacific in BR express blue, my favourite class in what I reguard as one of the most attractive british liveries.

To be completely honest, I would happily spend 100 quid on a loco with a ficticious livery just to annoy the rivet counters. These people do more harm to the hobby than good. They seem to have forgotten that the hobby is about having fun rather than one upmanship.
