Japan is nine hours ahead during Winter Time (GMT) and eight hours ahead in Summer Time (BST). People I have worked with (in the electronics / software sector) tend to get into the office about 9am and leave when their tasks for the day have been completed. When I was there we never got out of the office before 9pm.

So at 9am our time in the winter, they are thinking about going home.
