What yer bought this weekend (general)?

Bought myself a new (old) train book by Gustav Reder. It's a massive tome of 300+ pages on the history of steam locomotives and unlike others that concentrate on US prototype this covers much of Europe which is rare in an English language book. For once I can leave my German dictionary on the shelf.

I bought the Epoche I Faller coaling station.It is the first "scenic"for the locdepot I am planning.

These are great. I have a few similar items. I aim to get them looking a little more French and/or Brittish to fit in with the rest of my layout.

Yeah Doug,haven't started yet but am not displeased with the model.Have you bought any other Deutch/Epoche I II,from other manufactures.Any differences in quality etc.

I just have Faller. I have some MKD French models that are quite nice too, but are more modern. I'm going to get all my models looking roughly the same by using the same type of paint and weathering techniques.

Volmer aren't bad too. They are pretty similar to Faller.

I pretty much stick to Kibri, Faller and Volmer depending on who has the building I want. Of the three I probably have less of the Volmer just because the subject matter does not always fit thought the kits themselves are probably the best. I'm building a walled town and for that it's mainly Kibri and Faller.

So am I. After a trip to Rotenburg years ago, I had to recreate it in model and fortunately Faller have buildings which are modeled on it.

That should have been the way I asked my question. More do with "getting things to fit " if you buy from a different maufacturer!
The range is certainly out there, "plugging it together"is the trick I guess.

Faller and Kibri seem to fit well together. Volmer is good for the odd "showcase" building. Of course that's only my opinion though since I model in German prototype I have made dozens of these kits. The Volmer are the nicest to put together but sometimes they seem smaller than the others.

This week, I've bought a bunch of Lenz decoders for forthcoming reviews. I still don't know why I can't get these at a reasonable price in Europe. I have to buy these from the US. Dang, they come from a place a couple of hundred kilometers from my place, but these chips have traveled half way around the globe to get here.

I've also ordered a selection of Tillig track, points and point motors. This I'll test and let you know my findings. It should sort out some recent questions on the forums.

Have been looking at the Tillig catalogue as there track is rumoured to be better looking than PECo but it is definitely more expensive though.

Interested i the HOe I think it is too with the dual tracks for standard and narrow on the one track. The prototype in Perth here which i catch to and from work has exactly that - The Indian Pacific shares one rail with local transperth commuter stock!

Really good looking track, wish I had gone for it before I started to construct my latest layout , oh well too late now the Peco will have to stay, one for the next layout definitely

another bonus with the tiling is the track is that it's already pre-aged and solid point blades with no joins

After looking at all the OO track options, went for SMP which has scale sleepers etc (but same cost as PECO) for the plain line and building the points from rail and copper clad for the sleepers. With point templates, reasonably quality soldering iron (& flux!) and track gauge, points are very cheap and each one only takes an evening to build and they look much better in our opinion than the HO options. You can also sweep curves and points to suit your layout, and we have found it quite simple to build the points "insitu".

My Son & I are building a model of Bat & Ball Station c1930. In a space of about 8ft x 9ft (with open area in the middle to operate), the station platform lenghts are roughly to scale, so is the loco shed, goods yard and gas works sidings, albeit we have had to omit the long sidings which served the quarry and replace the down goods loop for a head shunt, again due to lack of space. Scenic boards will be on three sides and six-road "fiddle yard" on the fourth side.

We also looked at how best to operate the points, but found much to my surprise that - at Flair Rail our local model shop - the cost of a GEM lever frame, copper wire & tube etc, was more expensive than the equivalent number of Gaugemaster point motors! I doubt they are as good as the old H&M, but time will tell!

Hopefully over the weekend - especially if it rains and I'm not called to "gardening duties", we can wire up the points and at least have the fiddle yard and up and down main lines working!!

I agree Paul SMP is nice looking track, but for me it's time I would rather spend constructing my layout, detailing/weathering rolling stock etc and the Tiling is a good compromise

I've bought a bunch of LED lights that I'm going to use on the layout.

MR16 fittings, 18 suberbright white LEDs using 12 DC. 1 watt each. Replacing halogen track lighting at 20 watt per bulb.

What brand of track do you use? I have not found a source for extendible lighting track in the UK.
