For years I've used cork tiles bought from the local DIY shop. These are 30cm x 30cm square and about 3mm thick. The cork is not that cheap.

Recently I used some foam sheet because I ran out of cork and I'm amazed at how much quieter it is.

Obviously the foam is less-dense than the cork. It will deform if bruised though so you have to be relatively careful. I have 3mm foam bought in large sheets about 90cm x 150cm and they cost a couple of Euros a sheet. The DIY shop sells them as wall covering sheets. They come in 3mm and 6mm thicknesses. BTW, the 6mm sheets are great for making foamy RC planes.

The foam cuts much easier than the cork and I use 4cm wide strips as underlay. To use on curves, simply cut the strips 3/4 of the way though the width on the outer edge of the bend every 2cm.
