I never use it anyway!

I'm just waiting for the upgrade to the spell checker that is compatible with this latest version of the board software.

What you can use in the meantime is the built-in spell checker that the Firefox browser offers. It has British and US English language dictionaries as well as AU, ZA, NZ and most other languages. It underlines the misspelled words in red and you simple correct using a right click.

We can tell that from your posts - there - you were probably waiting for this comment - did'nt want to disappoint.
It's a shame certain posters on this, and other, forums don't make much more use of a spell-checker,they certainly need to!!
[I won't name names, but I think we all know who they are]

I surely can't be the only one that finds the appalling spelling and grammar irritating, offensive, and in some cases virtually unreadable....

After all, this is a public forum,it is only common courtesy to try to use the English Language correctly.....

So, c'mon Guys,-keep the standards up!!

Now,-I'm not against abbreviations etc. and with the best will in the world, the odd typo is bound to creep in,but it is the consistant mis-spelling of even simple words like axle, for example, that really grates, and the failure to capitalise and punctuate when neccessary. We all have the ability to edit our posts before replying and after posting,so there's no excuse, failure to do so is just laziness, and not being bothered about it is just slapdash...
On another forum one of the posters admits that he suffers from dyslexia, but,as he explains, although time-consuming he always goes back and re-reads his posts and corrects them if he can before posting [and they are always emminently readable]so if he can do it,-why can't others

i know i need to use the spel checker more but also i am someone who believes that language is a form of communication and not an art form.

i think as long as people can understand what i am saying, whats the problem?

if the spell checker is easy and fast i will endevour to use it.

I'm sorry,I don't wish to enter into an arguement,-but to me that sounds a bit like a slapdash attitude, not even being bothered to try and get it right,-the who cares?,as long as I get my meaning across stance!!

I wasn't advocating everyone elevating their posts to 'art form' standard,-just an reasonably acceptable standard,-i.e.not below the literacy level of a child attending primary school...
Using a capital I when refering to one's self is just basic stuff, for example...

Now,I'm not singling you out here Peter,as I said in my original post,I'm refering to other forums as well, but I think it is up to all of us to maintain reasonable standards, and try and do the best we can when using the English language [and I'm not suggesting that I'm word perfect myself, far from it!]....

Put it this way,-do you expect people to be polite when you deal with them in person?-i.e. behave to a reasonable standard?
-Or are you happy to suffer rudeness because you understand what they're saying?

Just please edit your posts before posting, out of common decency,-if for no other reason....

Aaah you didn't.

But on a more serious note I do have to agree with DS239 about the level of literacy at times. It is not just spelling it's the standard of grammar that puts my teeth on edge. If people took a little longer while writing their posts perhaps some of the more obvious howlers would be picked up.

The other thing is that some of the posts on here are starting to resemble text messages, and believe me those I really can't understand!!

I feel the need to remind you all that this is a model rail forum and not an english lit' exam or any other kind of spelling contest and if it bothers you that we are not all educated to the highest standards or born with a plum in our mouths then it is your problem, we are here to spread the skills and knowleadge and general idea's, sorry if I have jumped up onto my soap box but it needed saying

Well said bro sewell. Here here

Fully agree with your words. Does it really matter if a forum user fails to spell correctly?

So long as what they have typed is legible and understood what's the problem?

Incidentally, I was taught that there was a space left after a comma or full stop!

Well said by Brian & Brian (from another Brian).

I know of several people who are very bad at spelling and/or grammer & have either sucessfull business's or excel in their chosen proffession & are well respected.

On the other side I know & have met some people who may have been well educated & have perfect spelling & grammer who, because of their total lack of common sense are about as useful as a chocolate teapot. (A bit like many politicians & High Court Judges).

As long as the writer has made a reasonable effort to the best of their ability, then that IMHO is all that matters.

I, for one try to get it close, however, sometimes I "hop on" to the forum just before going to work & "dash off" a reply only to find later about the mistakes.

If you really don't like the way someone has written anything, just do what you may do with someone out in the real world - ignore them.

Regarding text speak - a lady that I know sends texts in full "correct grammer" - no abbreviations, full punctuation, capitals & so on. It must take her ages to send - I know it can take a while to read !

Oh well, back to models railways - just off to the workshop to convert a LGB loco to DCC.

I'm rubbish at spelling. Firefox spell check saves the day. Check out my Blog for today's building progress.
Spell checker!! if you use MS IE browser then you have a spell checker on your computer.
After typing your message in Model Forum - feast your eyes at IE's top and select abc'(tick) - . The Spell checker will appear though US version, and you typed message will be checked for spelling only, not grammar errors.

Another annoying error is at present evident - each posting made within a log in requires a new log-in for each posting - this error was reported some time ago. Any other members experiencing this error

doubleoo, I'm not aware MS IE has a spell checker. The only spell checker on my system when I reply to a post is as you say ABC with a tick beneath it but that's part of the forum and requires the spell checking software to be downloaded which I suspect you may have done at some stage.

Further to my last entry, the spell checker that I refer has no reference to the Forum's, but relates to MS IE browser. I have not downloaded or installed any Spell Checker on my computer.

Checker is shown as iEspell English (US) by Microsoft.

doubleoo, 'iespell' is not a component of Microsoft's Internet Explorer and if it exists on your computer you have downloaded it at sometime - inadvertently perhaps. 'iespell' is a shareware Internet Explorer extension and free to the casual user (although donations welcome) such as yourself but chargeable commercially. When downloaded it does get added to the Internet Explorer tool bar however which is were confusion may arise.
Gofer, I respect your comments and perhaps I am most fortunate to having a Spell checker able to check all my entries to Model Rail Forum.
