Why a vs b?

In this forum there seems to be an increasing number of threads that are based on the merits/defaults of one manufacturer or system against another with those who should know better jumping to the defence of their particular favourite.

Surely, the wiser modeller uses all manufacturers products as and when circumstances dictate their use, thus Fleischmann sits alongside Roco, Piko and Trix and it is only the obsessive compulsive that believes that one is generically better than t'other?

My own layout is populated by whatever fits the bill, not what is released by whatever manufacturer, however that is not to say that I do not use a better product when it becomes compromised (the BR50 is a good example). I also set myself a standard which is almost twenty-odd years old, and no loco is allowed to be less than that standard. This does not mean that I reduce the detail on my latest models but I do fit handrails and footsteps to my older stock- a rewarding exercise in both personal and financial terms.

Why not look upon the choices as being inclusive rather than partisan, we are indeed lucky to have choices!

Robert,

I think it is brand loyalty in action. Most people have their favourites. While no one brand is perfect some, generally speaking, produce products which appeal to a specific group of people because of qualities that they prefer being inherent in that brand. Each individual modeller has his own priorities, and these can vary considerably from modeller to modeller, which is why you get such heated debate when any assertion, whether positive or negative is made about any of the big brands. As it is the modellers preferences that he feels is being challenged.

Spot on.

Those who model continental Europe are spoilt for choice. As an example a "hobby" range DB class 218 diesel can be bought new for as little as £40.00, if however you want an all singing and dancing Fleischmann DCC sound equipped model of the same thing the price is going to be much nearer £200.00

Not sure if you were referring to my Marklin vs Trix thread. My intention was know the differences between the 3 rail AC and 2 rail DC systems and also the interrelationship between the two companies. I currently have a mix of Fleischmann, Minitrix and Roco in N gauge so like yourself will buy what fits the purpose.

Not sure if you are aware but Fleischmann, Roco produce 3 rail versions of most of their loco's although not sure how easy they are to come by.

If you're shopping in "Maerklin land", very easily
as I noted during my holiday in eastern Switzerland this summer.
