I think it's all down to the effect of colour and scale. High gloss looks fine on an ex works loco in real life. However when you scale it down by whatever ratio is being modelled it actually ends up looking wrong. The light refraction is totally different on the model. In actual fact most model manufacturers now use satin finishes which replicates the shine much more effectively.

It didn't look at all realistic and I'm totally convinced now.

In addition to BRITHO's comments, I rather think that full size locos are not very glossy in the first place and, what gloss there is, fades rapidly.

Ex works locos, certainly in the BR blue period were varnished, however, as Rail-Rider has suggested the gloss soon faded with day to day running and a layeer of grime.
