Wind Mills

Issue 11 which just reached Canada this week has an excellent article on wind mills. The sidebar on page 44 covers signalling with the mill. In Sussex wind mills near the channel were sometimes used to signal French smugglers who would lie below the horizon and observe the mill from their masthead. Because excise officers were mostly recruited from inland counties they were not familiar with wind mill operation so the miller could walk the mill against the wind to inform the smugglers that the coast was clear.

IMHO Hornby magazine continues to be an excellent buy and a cut above the competition.

Funnily enough I have passed our local windmill which doesn't actually appear in the article but I think is the one on which the Skaledale one is based - Drapers Mill here in Margate.
