The relay method works, and is generally what I use. It can also be possible to switch the crossings using the turnouts which route through them.

Not really just treat it like to sets of points, as electrically speaking that's what it is.

I generally use 'sugar cube' types, just had a dig throuhg the parts draws to check its ratings - 5A @ 110v AC with a 12v coil. Something like this from Maplin's They're £3 each and should do the trick.
