World's first train spotter?

The BBC Magazine website has a an article on the world's first trainspotter. This is traduced from the presence in the NRM collection of letter written in 1825 from a 14 year old boy to his sisters in London describing a train he had seen on the newly opened Stockton & Darlington railway. You can read more here on the BBC website.

I'm suprised that they didn't make any mention of whether he wore an anorak or not.

I spoke to my father in law about this a while back and he said whjen he was a kid it was very popular when the locos were all steam. It does seem to have declined after the demise of steam and you can see why. Diesels are nowhere near as glamorous or interesting.
