A friend of mine uses the Gaugemaster units for his extensive Z-Gauge layouts & has not had any problems at all - check out www.gaugemaster.com for full details.

Yes I've had one for a good number of years with simulated brake and delayed throttle response - it's not been used a lot - but it's always been reliable and the control on the modern 5 pole motors is very good. The 3 pole were a little sticky - but that is probably because they weren't run very often. I now use it to run my modern Hornby on my rolling road and a test track - (but no load attached) and the control and simulated brake is excellent. I can get my Merchant Navy to turn its wheels at a very smooth and very slow rate almost imperceptible.
As to other makes I've not seen any advertised except Maerklin's own - probably the market is too small.
I gave up my Z gauge - I just couldn't cope with the track laying at my age, hand/ eye coordination is getting a bit unreliable. I got rid of over £5000 worth of stuff. Ah well it was fun whilst it lasted.
And yes I'd recommend the gaugemaster.
Best Regards
