I've got a top of the range all singing and dancing Kodak, the print definition is poor, it's
so poor I hooked up to my Mrs PC. I use Laser black and white for volume and railway stuff
I have a colour one BTW they can also do decals. Refills are cheap when you used these guys:
toner refill. I paid just over 50 quid for my Samsung
Laser Colour printer, it's a little slow about the same speed as the kodak. The Samsung mono
Laser is the real beast and will turn out reams of manuals without a blink. Its really cheap to run
I would never go back to ink jet.

Gary,
I've got a Dell v505w, older version of the current v525w.
Whilst a lot of folks seem to hate Dell, I've never had problems with any of their kit - and have had/used a TON of it over the years.

This printer is an all-in-one and does an excellent job of all three functions.

Printing is exceptional - you need to know/have the correct settings for the correct documents, but that's true with any printer. I've seen some folks print with "default" settings and get crap out of the highest end business printers.
It prints colour photos extremely well on photo paper, and I'm printing all my Scalescenes pages on the thing on Epson Presentation paper, and the results are wonderful - very consistent. I've not tried transfers yet, but provided you get a decent quality inkjet transfer medium I'm sure the results will be perfect. Only reason I've not tried it is that I can't find decent BR "graphics" and fonts so far, and the transfer sheets here are about as much as buying the finished product from a vendor it seems...

It's wifi and network wired so anyone/everyone in the house has access and can use it.

(Touch wood) I haven't had to buy one for a bit.
But if I were, I'd again buy an A3 printer like my main present one. It is really useful for model making etc to have the possibility of stepping up to the larger format, rather than having to join printed A4 images together.

I bought mine before the cost of colour laser printers came down. The main disadvantage of inkjet is the cost of cartridges. To maintain photo quality I find I have to stay with the maker's own cartridges, the generic ones eventually gum up the printing head.
I overcome the water soluble inkjet printing using spray fixative - just the cheapest hairspray will do - before 'weathering' with thin watered down acrylics, powder or pencil crayon.

Some places do deals where you buy the toners or inks and get a free printer. We've got the Dell B/W and Dell colour lasers that way. After a couple of years we're still using the original supply of toners. IJT Direct was the place with the deals we found.
