I have recently bought a new Bachmann model Class 3F locomotive 47472 [produced exclusively for Transport Models].

I purchased a Bachmann decoder [36-552] for conversion to DCC operation from Model Railway Direct. [Dimensions 25 x 10 x 5 mms]

I am not able to find enough space within the loco to store the decoder once it has been plugged into the 8 pin plate.

Do I need a different smaller decoder or is there a way of locating the decoder in the locos body that is eluding me at the moment?

Dimensions should have read 25 x 16 x 5 mms.

There is clearly room for a decoder inside the front end of the boiler/smokebox but 16 mms is far too wide to fit, more like 12 mms diameter

*** I have two of them fitted with the DCCconcepts S2 and the stay alive... both fit easily in the boiler.

Do not forget to remove the capacitors.

When this model first appeared, I put a Lenz Silver in the cab (similar size to your 36-552). Bachmann have done a good job on the metal packing, and that's the only void for a larger decoder. That was hardwired (no socket on early versions) required some cutting internally to make the wiring path, and the loco body remains tethered by the wiring to the chassis. All a bit of a faff, but that was the decoder I had by me at the time. Later, on another example I used a Lenz mini, very easy, that just pops into the void in the smokebox: and a larger decoder will go in if the ballast weight in the smokebox is removed, there's two or three screws underneath on the centreline (lots of screws for such a little piece is what I remember).

Well worth cutting small rebates in the keeper plate to allow the sprung centre axle an extra half millimetre of downward travel BTW, helps pick up reliability.

For those who collect such things, there is a review of the DCC On Board Jinty in BRM October 2006. The author ended up taking the Bachmann decoder out because there were no instructions for adjusting CVs for slow running. He mentions the Zimo MX 63R and TCS M1 as being suitable (these may well be obsolete now). My experience with Hornby and Bachmann decoders is that CV support is quite sparse.
