Like you i couldn't resist No88 in Prussian Blue even though it was only painted like that on the West somerset Railway. I also have 89 in plain black. I plan to convert some old Triang GW clerestory coaches into fake SDJR coaches after reading an article where somebody had made Southern Railway coaches from them by cutting the clerestory off the roof. I have abandoned it for now as I found that although they ran through old Peco code 100 points ok they don't like the later ones and bounce a bit! They really don't like the single slip at all. So I will have to get new bogies for them I expect. Anyway, a job for the future.
Nothing done today, it was dog maintenance this afternoon. & westies were due for Frontline and they also got a bum trim and a trim up round the ears and face.
I like your display by hte way.

Hi again Chris,
Sounds like its been a very busy day there for you & Liz, along with the Westies too - all now looking very smart indeed no doubt !
Have a very old book here published back in 1967 by Robin Atthill called The Somerset & Dorset Railway, which is a tiny A5 size paperback, which is a fascinating read, with lots of detail on the Railways history, including some wonderful photos too; plus a lot of first hand accounts of experiences of the railway on many fronts - found it in a junk shop years ago !
Like your plan on the old Triang GW clerestory coaches, have a number of those here picked up at a show for almost nothing; & had a plan to use / convert to some Camping Coaches, which also had seen a video on, like you had on the conversions - also still on the To Do List here as well ;)
Thank you in terms of the display cases, they live on the landing walls & at least allow the locos to be seen / enjoyed, as against hidden away in boxes gathering dust - have two large display cases mounted at the moment; & another smaller one needing to be fitted; there are some photos of them on the Loft thread too.
Anyway, hope the dogs aren't not talking to you guys tonight after today, have a nice evening, Cheers for now, Norm

Hello Norm, I checked my books and i have got a copy of Robin Atthill's book, a very good read.
Hi Chris,
Excellent stuff - it is indeed quite a hive of information on all sorts of aspects of the S&DJR for sure. Glad you enjoyed it too.
As mentioned previously too it includes some excellent old photo / plates too.
Am actually in the process of sorting out & going through the railway book & magazine collection, as have freed up some space on the book shelfs, so rather than being in a few piles should be able to have them so much easier to see & use hopefully.
Lets see what other books are discovered or uncovered .....................
Cheers for now, Norm

That reminds me, I must have a good sort out of my books. Apart from books i really wanted to get I bought two or three lots of railway interest books from our local auctioneers a while ago. About 3/4 are ones I want to keep but there are some duplicates of books I already had and about 20 or so that are not of interest or are "coffee table" books. I uesd to sell on ebay but gave that up years ago as our nearest Post Office is now a 9 mile round trip and it left very little over after postage cost etc. It was ok if I sold something for a good amount but I think the surplus books will just go back into the auction sale. That sounds a bit miserable doesn't it, anyway I got a lot of books that were worth what I paid so I am happy.
Chris

Can't have enough books eh ;)
Also a good local library, apparently we get 20 books per card, also one is mine, but not sure have seen it for years, but Sharon is keeping it safe :)
Don't think you have any problems on the above at all, storage or coffee table space apart perhaps !
Still waiting for The Leader book to arrive from the County Archive, guess are dusting it off as we speak :)
Once you enjoy the books Chris, that's the main thing for sure.
Cheers as always, Norm

You should see our coffee table! Then again perhaps not, it is usally covered with bits of knitting.
The wind wasn't so bad here today and the sun was out making the cabin warmer so I thought is was the right time to add some modroc to the cutting surface. It dried out fairly well by 4 o'clock so should be ready for some static grass soon.
Image

The sunlight has blown out the white plaster a bit. I also sprayed the bits of slate in the background with a light grey and a darker colour ready for a warmer colour wash to hopefully make it look like Mendip limestone. The cutting walls are a bit steep but the S&D had a lot of steep ones.
Chris

Hi Chris,
Best we don't mention coffee tables or tables of most sorts probably, always a surprise to see the table top for sure !
That photo looks excellent really like the feel of the whole thing, including the excellent detail on the fence following the contour of the ground, along with the ballast (* what did you use out of interest as looks very effective), & the sweeping curve itself too - very very nice modelling. Can't wait to see a couple of Prussian Blue S&DJR locos running through there too.
Good luck with the next stages / steps & keep the photos flowing.
Cheers for now & Happy Modelling, Norm

Tables in our house are for putting things on top of other things! We are both hoarders of possibly useful things, i think all creative people are.
The ballast is Woodland Scenics medium ballast, brown part number B1379. i got it from Guagemaster who must be quite near you. I have also used some Legacy Ballast LB 4BB Brownish Blend for the loco shed area. This is almost black so I hope it will look like ash/cinders spilt on the track. This came from Legacymodels.co.uk

My nearest model shops are all 25 miles or so away so I usually use mail order these days. I chose the brown ballast as it look nearest to old colour pictures of track in the West County. About 15 years ago we stayed near Burnham in Somerset and walked along some of the Taunton to Bridgwater canal which was also close to the Bristol to Exeter main line and the ballast there was a brownish shade.
Chris

As an old 'Bridgwatertonion' I can testify that most things in the area were brown - particularly the River Parrett and the sea! Not a lot had changed on that front when last there a couple of years ago!

The new cutting is coming along now. I have coated it with static grass, it will need a bit more after the glue has properly dried and the excess grass vaccumed off. i can see a few bare patches even now. Once this is done then a bit of ballast at the foot will finish it off.
I posed my S&D locos for some photos, here they are.

I had thoughts about the double header picture today. I think that the 2P should be the train engine as the 7Fs didn't have train heating and weren't very popular when used on cold days in the spring. There were disgruntled passengers according to Ivo Peters in one of his books. I put them the way round that they are because I have put a crew in the 7F, I haven't got round to it in the other loco as yet. I need some new glue for the grass, I found this afternoon that about half hasn't stuck! There are more than a couple of small bare patches. Oh well, it will get done properly soon.
Chris

@Christine Brooks

I think your grass looks amazing, not to mention your fence. Really reminds me of back home :)

A quick question if I may - do you think this static grass is worth the money? And do they work as well as a lot of reveiws suggest or is it dependant upon the person using them?

Static grass is worth using, I tried a grass mat but had a lot of trouble gluing it down. I have found that it pays to buy good quality static grass, I bought some cheaper stuff via an eBay shop. It works ok but is a bit bright green ( it looks worse on photographs) so I mix several colours together. I now mostly use Woodland Scenics grass. PVA must go off, I vacummed the area i dod the other day and even more came unstuck. It may be the cold and damp. I keep a dehumidifier running and it fills the reservior every 2 or 3 days but it must be wetter than a room in the house. The distilled water is handy for my live steam locos anyway. This is the wrong section but here is a picture of Dylan on a quick run today.

Hi Chris,
Glad you had some sunshine there today even if a little cold to get steam up, as you said before a great combination for some lovely trains in action outside. Sure you enjoyed it.
We had lots of sunshine yesterday but very overcast here today and getting very cold as the day went on !
Thanks for posting, Cheers again for now, Norm

After finding that the old pva I was using hadn't stuck all the grass down and some of the ballast came loose when I cleaned the area I had a think whilst decorating. I have some spray glue sold as picture mount which I have used in the past for sticking downloadable kits onto card. I sprayed this on the bare patches and so far it has stuck the grass down ok. Time will tell!
We had a very sharp frost first thing but it was pleasant for the time of year in the afternoon, I didn't need heating in the railway cabin.
