I think the pva has gone off, it is old stuff I bought years ago to seal new render when building the extension to the house. I shouldn't be cheapskate really but old habits of not wasting things die hard. I will get some new stuff when I next go shopping. When I check an hours ago it was drying nicely so I shall pick out any remaining lumps tomorrow. As Smudge said washing up liquid does work, the glue ( without lumps!) spreads easily through the ballast. I usually try for a 50/50 mix but really don't measure it out, I just add water until it seems right.

Hi Chris,
Looks like lots of good progress of late.
Really like the retaining walls & that road entrance into the Goods Yard looks excellent; once the embankment on the TT side & rest of the finishes are added will look very striking for sure.
It's No Good mentioning Ballasting to me, your Forum South Coast member mentioned in similar despatches previously; but whilst understand the waste not attitude too; PVA can definitely go off big time - have seen complete plastered walls taken down, where old / off PVA was used ! But it sounds like a few surface blobs aside, fingers crossed the recent ballasting will be fine.
Sounds like those Willis Whitemetal Kits attracted some high hammer prices, so maybe just not meant to be eh !
Good Luck on further progress plus the external decorations - might need to batten down the hatches from tomorrow tho !
Cheers as always & Happy Modelling, Norm

The arches wall are Scale Model Scenery. The wall I am making for the road is from scratch using foam board ( 3mm thick ) covered with stone ( random ashlar) texture downloaded from Scalescenes.
I had a quick check first thing when giving the chickens their food and the blobs of pva have disappeared thank goodness. I will have to get some new pva before attempting anymore ballasting. A wet day here and getting windy and more so tomorrow with gusts up to 50mph just when we have to go and get our Covid vaccines which are not free for us this year, the goal posts have been moved yet again. ( that's todays moan)

I don't use washin
That sounds a good idea to put washing up liquid in the spray bottle as well, or possibly instead of mixing it with the pva. I'll try that next time.
I don't use washing up liquid at all, but as I understand it, you first spray the ballast with water AND washing up liquid, then spray the PVA mix so it works it's way through the ballast.

That’s correct, thought I used a syringe for the pva. I used an old windolene spray bottle for water / washing up mix.

Do you need to take it out of the bag first or doesn't it make any difference - Just Askin' Like ;)
