Hi Chris,
Been another nice bright if chilly day here again too, albeit got very cold very quickly tonight with lots of stars now visible too - but the rabbits all had a good run out. Good to hear no heating needed for you on the railway room front too.
Have used the 3D Spray glues green & red tins on various things in the Loft over the years too; whilst not on the ballast or scenery scatter / static grass landscape; did use it on fixing greenery to the faces & ridges on retaining walls & the like, all with no problems since so far - so hopefully what you have done will be fine. PVA does tend to have a "best by" date for sure; unless using as a very dilute sort of wash perhaps.
Anyway hope todays tlc works out for you. Cheers for now & Happy Modelling, Norm

Hi Chris PVA does not like the cold either storing or using it I think it should be stored somewhere no lower than 3 degrees I may be wrong without checking my tub which is in my shed. If you use it when it is cold a heater set on low would be more helpful it can take up to eight hours for it go off fully. I had intended to get a thermostatically controlled heater but as yet have not bought one instead I already had a heater which I use I must admit not liking the idea of leaving it on overnight though. Nor the cost of running it! I only put mine on when I'm going to be working there.

It was a very starry night here last night, did you see the Moon and Venus close together on Saturday?
Our Westies love the frost but they won't stay out with me for very long, Liz is the pack leader and they stick with her, she has to limit her time in the cold because of her arthritis and cold makes her feel really ill.
I checked the thermometer in the cabin and it looks like it hasn't got lower than +2C but it is an old max-min and the fliud is almost clear so it is hard to see if the float is actually sitting on the top. I used to leave a heater on all night on the frost setting when electricity wasn't such a high price. It ought to be safe enough if you have a RRCD trip on the supply to an outbuilding, I find that usually trips before any ordinary circuit breaker.
I will not use the old glue for detail work but it seems to have stuck the foam insulation pieces alright but it did take a while before they were well and truly stuck.
I must get round to making some signals but decorating has to come first unfortunately, I have spent two days getting old wallpaper paste off the walls in the cat room so that it will take paint. It will look good when it is done, start painting tomorrow.

Hi Chris,
Indeed a Star gazer dream eh - been quite a few times in the last few months on those clear nights with stunning sights for sure !
Or do they all run in with wet feet / short legs just like the bunnies first thing - no matter whose in front maybe !
Well next few days sound / could be ideal for steam - outside / then steam inside for the next few / maybe a change of plan ......................
Sounds like Thermometers & Coffee Tables work similarly ............... or just don't perhaps - we have hottie bottie bunny runs 2x a day - Madness Or What ;)
My vote is come on the signals / finish the painting !
Cheers for now, Norm

The new cutting is coming along now. I have coated it with static grass, it will need a bit more after the glue has properly dried and the excess grass vaccumed off. i can see a few bare patches even now. Once this is done then a bit of ballast at the foot will finish it off.
I posed my S&D locos for some photos, here they are.

That's lovely Christine.
Good work and I love the steep fall toward the fence and reminds me of a few foolish shortcuts I tried to take on the IOM all for a better view.

Just a tiny bit of progress. I tried to complete the signal that I started about 3 months ago, I was making a pig's ear trying to get two wires attached to the signal arms. It was much easier about 15 years ago when i made the last one! I gave up and eventually just glued them in the off position so they look right when a train passes.
A couple of pictures taken with my phone.

I am quite impressed with using the phone, a bit of processing afterwards and they look ok for the web.
Perhaps now that I have got back to doing something it will get me back at it.

Hi Chris,
Great to see you posting on the Cabin layout again - only pointed someone in its direction on a post earlier this weekend funnily enough - timing eh ;)
That corner has really turned out very nicely & think the signal looks the part totally.
As said previously makes an ideal setting for that lovely S&DJR train for sure.
Photos from the phone look great too, technology eh - no more plates / rolls of film & waiting for days to see any results either :)
Look forward to some further posts from the Cabin (*& the Garden Railway too of course), Cheers as always, & Happy Modelling, Norm

Hi Carl, The loco is a 2P designed by Fowler for the Midland Railway, some were bought by the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway. They looked good in prussian blue, crimson lake suited them well on the MR as well. The model is by Hornby. Chris

It’s lovely, I’ve got a thing for blue locomotives.

As Chris already knows, same here - S&DJR plus a few others are hard to beat for sure -

A S&DJR layout eh ..................................

PS. A Blue A4 isn't too bad either tho !

I have had a dehumidifier running in the cabin since the winter of 2019/20 and use some of the water from it in a steam iron and save some for my live steam locos on the garden line. We are in a hard water area here in East Anglia and tap water doesn't do the steam iron or live seam boilers any favours. This morning the dehumidifier reservior was full. When I came to empty into a large container I noticed a pinkish sludge in the bottom and the water was faintly discoloured. A search came up with a bacteria called Serratia marcescens which can give respiratory symptoms in humans, slight cough, shortness of breath. It was recommended to clean with household disinfectant. The bacteria likes damp and won't survive long on dry surfaces. Hopefully this will stop it happening again soon. The only thing that has changed in teh cabin recently is that I have stored some hydrangea heads and bits of heather to dry off ready to try making trees from them. Maybe I bought in the bacteria from the garden, the cabin was very hot during the good weather in May even with the door open and now we have had some much cooler wet weather. I don't wish to be alarmist but please check dehundifiers, if you use one, when emtpying.

Another very hot day here, by the afternoon it was too much even for me outside so I decided to have a go at making some trees. After seeing an article in an old Railway Modeller where hydrangea flower heads and dried bits of heather had been used as a basis for the shape of a tree I had been drying some old flower heads and various other plant material for a few weeks now.
I can't remember what plant this is but here is the basic stem.
Image

I then sprayed it with two shades of grey acrylic paint. When that was dry, no time at all in this heat it was then sprayed with adhesive and foilage scatter, left over Woodland Scenics and new from Scale Model Scenery was dropped over the top. Here is the result in situ.
Image

This is actually on my 7mm branch line, Somerton, which is very much a work in progress. The tree scaled out at between 45 and 50 feet at this scale

I made another with two bits of Hydrangea flower head glued together and the rest as above.

This again is about 45 feet to scale. I need to tidy up the trunk but am pleased with the result as a first proper attempt at making trees. There are plenty more peices drying so I hope to make a good many more soon.
Chris

Hi Chris,
It's certainly getting hot again & supposed to only get hotter too - not looking forward to that tbh.
Those trees look excellent & even more so for a first attempt - that's hard to believe really !
Those sort of scale heights sound good, had an attempt at some OO gauge wire armature / old cables one's a while ago, great fun & there's definitely a swift learning curve, as you continue too.
With the trunks some modelling clay such as Das seems to be very popular method, with some further painting & lichens / etc.
Good luck & have fun with the rest of the forest ;)
Cheers as always, Norm
